Fabulously frugal Father’s Day tips

Once summer arrives, Father’s Day is just around the corner. For many of us, Dad may have been our first financial advisor. He taught us about saving and spending wisely, so do him proud with these fun, low-cost Father's Day gift ideas.

You don't have to spend much to show Dad how much you appreciate him. Whether he's easy or hard to shop for, a Father's Day gift that doesn't break the bank is a win-win. We have suggestions that range from frugal to completely free, depending on your Dad — and your budget.

Give him the gift of relaxation

1. Throw him a home barbecue. If he normally mans the grill, hand him a drink, sit him in a lounge chair and take over. Or better yet, let him give you the grill-master tutorial you know he wants to impart upon you.

2. Does he have a favorite restaurant meal? Look up a copycat recipe and make it at home. (That will usually save him a few extra calories, which is a great present, too.)

3. Offer up your time and sweat — let dad take the day off while you handle some of his chores, especially any he’s been putting off (like the leaking roof or overgrown lawn).

4. Can’t visit dad this weekend? Create and mail (or email) him some coupons for a home-cooked meal or hard work during your next trip.

5. Breakfast in bed — it's an oldie, but a goodie. A true classic gift that never gets old. Treat Dad to his favorite breakfast before his feet hit his slippers. Include a good book or magazine to read if you really want him to relax to the max.

Get him something special

1. Is your dad a granddad? Have your kids draw pictures for grandpa and frame them for a nice presentation.

2. Create your own card for Dad, letting him know just how much you appreciate him. Include a favorite memory from the past just to add a touch of nostalgia.

3. Bake him his favorite cake or a batch of your famous cookies. He can't say no to those.

4. Hand make him a gift. He’ll appreciate the time and love that went into it. If you happen to borrow his tools in the process, be sure to put them away, too.

5. Really want to buy him a gift? Look for coupons first! If you have siblings, pool your resources.

Get him something that doesn't cost a dime

1. Spend time together. Sometimes, all Dad wants is some quality time. Go one better and ask him to tell you the story of his first job or a memory from when he was in school.

2. Swap out his desktop picture. Replace the wallpaper on Dad's computer, his smartphone, or tablet with an unexpected picture of his loved ones.

3. Organize his closet. Dads aren't known for having the neatest sock drawers, do the big guy a favor by taking on a chore he's sure to avoid. If you have enough planning time, sneak in and take pictures of everyone taking turns wearing his favorite print shirt.

4. Host family game night. Staying in and playing board games is the perfect solution. If he's in the mood, have him teach you a new game. Dads love to teach what they know.

5. Make him a throne fit for kings. Dads are usually kings of their castle, and every king needs a throne. Decorate his favorite chair (all Dads have one) and spend the day waiting on him hand and foot.
